Sam Biles started singing in ’87 when he and his two friends, Feev and Joel, decided to start a band named “Dead Baby Korpses” (aka. Dave Biles' Kids) This band was vaguely a punky crossover kinda hybrid. The vocals were clear and sung basically in the style of early punk/hardcore shit like the Sex Pistols/7 Seconds. Admittedly, the band wasn’t very good, but it started the ball a rollin’, and was a very good learning experience. This band lasted until early ’89 when Joel and Feev, who had left the band sometime earlier, reunited with Sam to form a speedcore/hardcore band with the help of two other ex-DBK members; Brad Lancaster and Tommy Jenkins; and later Curt Bonde. At first, this band had no name, but as you well know, Sam changed that soon after and Hideous Mangleus was born. The style of the singing started to change, and at first was more or less a screaming, giving it a Septic Death style vocal. But, after hearing the vocal stylings of Lee Dorian and Ross Dolan, Sam decided to experiment with the “growl” style vocal, which beyond being “powerful”, is very fitting for Hideous’ over the top approach. He admits he may not be “the lowest growler on the planet”, but he has been celebrated for being one of the most unique. Sam has been in three other bands, Goblin and Splatterhead and Nest. Goblin recorded a demo around 2000 which has recently been released by Ecocentric Records, Germany (Heavier than fuck with “heavy” vox, a must have!); and Splatterhead and Nest had a lot of fun but, never got around to recording a demo. Referred to by fans as “The Master of Horrors”, in some ways Sam has always been the “most visible” member of Hideous due to the fact that he did most of the correspondence with fans, 'zines, etc. He also did the artwork for the bands releases, T’s, etc. Not to mention some of the most fucked up lyrics penned. Sam continues on to this day with Hideous, at least in the capacity of correspondence until his schedule would permit other possibilities, like some reunion shows or recording some of the unreleased material.
